When the words "Song Dynasty" go up on the wall, the choice of material is itself a statement. CHYIHAUR shaped the brand lettering in 3mm black iron, using a welded-rod standoff floating-foot technique to lift the letters off the wall. No lighting, no gloss finish, letting the composed, natural tone of black iron speak through light and shadow, and letting understated craft detail carry the presence of the storefront.

Project Background & Challenge
Song Dynasty's outdoor sign was meant to convey not flamboyance but a composed, restrained brand character. Mounted on an exterior wall, the lettering had to hold enough sculptural presence without relying on lighting. The choice of material and technique had to give the sign depth under natural light alone while withstanding the long-term demands of an outdoor environment, and that was the starting point of the project.
The choice to stay unlit
Lighting was ruled out from the start. Song Jhao wanted composure rather than spectacle, and once a light source is added, brightness gets read before the material does. So legibility was handed back to tonal contrast: the column stays off-white, the 3mm black iron is cut and left in its raw iron colour, and dark against pale separates on its own in daylight — no glow needed. Through the day the only thing that changes is the shadow, not a lamp.

Design Goal & Strategy
We chose 3mm black iron as the material for the lettering, preserving the composed color and weight of the metal. For the technique, we used a welded-rod standoff floating-foot design: round rods are welded to the back of each letter and the letters are mounted off the wall, so they lift from the surface and cast shadows of varying depth as the sun moves through the day. The whole piece is unlit, keeping the visual focus on the material itself and the play of light and shadow.

Those slim bars are round rods welded to the back of the mark as standoff feet. They hold the whole piece clear of the column, so the wall gains a shadow — and that shadow is where the sense of depth comes from, the only layering an unlit sign gets. Every fixing sits behind the piece; nothing shows from the front.
