Selected Works

Understated, yet impossible to ignore

CHYIHAUR partnered with bofa_design (Two Factors Interior Design) to craft the interior brand signage for Joman Studio, made with CHYIHAUR's signature faux-rust stainless steel technique. The composed, weathered patina plays against the gleaming million-dollar award medals in the space—understated, yet impossible for any visitor to overlook.

Step into Joman Studio and the first thing to catch your eye is that wall of gleaming million-dollar award medals—but your gaze is quickly pulled toward another presence: an understated yet striking piece of interior brand signage. Working alongside the designers at bofa_design (Two Factors Interior Design), CHYIHAUR used a special faux-rust stainless steel technique to give the space this composed, confident brand signature.

01

Project Background & Challenge

Joman Studio's interior was designed by bofa_design (Two Factors Interior Design), and the space already held a powerful visual focal point—a wall of gleaming million-dollar award medals. A bright, attention-grabbing sign would only compete with the medals; yet as a mark of brand identity, it could not be lost in the space. The challenge of this project was to create a sign that was 'understated yet prominent': one that never steals the scene, yet catches the eye of everyone who walks through the door.

A rust-toned metal plate fixed to a dark wood-grain wall, its surface rough and mottled, pale lettering at the lower right, and a point of light in the blurred interior to the right.

One bright, one muted

The room already has a gleaming award as its focal point, so a bright, eye-catching sign would only compete with it. The approach is reversed here: the stainless steel is given a rusted finish, trading the mirror quality of metal for the rough texture of corrosion. What makes it legible is the light and shade that raking light draws out of the uneven rust, not reflection. Holding back is exactly what lets it stand its ground in a refined interior.

Design Goals & Strategy

Working in collaboration with the interior designers, we chose one of CHYIHAUR's signature techniques—faux-rust stainless steel—as the primary language of the sign. The rough, weathered texture of the faux-rust surface carries an innate sense of time and weight, striking a perfect contrast with the brilliance of the medals: one bright, one deep; one refined, one raw—each setting off the other rather than competing. The sign settles into the overall interior as a brand feature wall, becoming a composed, understated signature for the brand.

The rust-toned metal plate set into a recess in a dark wood wall, with concealed lighting spilling above and below it; a floor-to-ceiling window on the right shows daylit city towers.

Recess and hidden light

The panel sits inside a recess in the timber wall, with the light source tucked along its top and bottom edges — it washes the grain rather than the lettering, letting the sign lift off the wall. A panel finished at the factory still has to meet the interior's finished surfaces, and that comes down to precise positioning on site.

Macro close-up at an oblique angle: the rust-toned surface reads as coarse sandy grain, and the letters are cut down into the plate, their grooves showing smooth metal that catches the raking light.

Depth of the cut

The letters are not applied to the surface; they are cut down into the panel, all the way through the rusted finish and into the stainless steel beneath, so the walls of each groove keep a clean metal face.

Project Outcome

In the finished Joman Studio, visitors are drawn in by that wall of gleaming million-dollar award medals—yet they find it just as hard to overlook this understated but striking interior brand sign. The composed patina lets the brand identity hold its ground in a refined space without stealing the scene, dovetailing seamlessly with the designers' overall plan—proof that a great sign doesn't have to shout to be remembered.

FAQ

This is a case study of interior brand signage created for Joman Studio through a collaboration between CHYIHAUR and bofa_design (Two Factors Interior Design), crafted with CHYIHAUR's signature faux-rust stainless steel technique. The sign blends into the space with an understated, composed rust patina, playing off the gleaming million-dollar award medals inside.

Faux-rust stainless steel is a signature CHYIHAUR technique that renders the look of weathered, rusted old metal over a durable stainless steel base—the very technique used for Joman Studio's interior brand signage. It combines the raw atmosphere of industrial style with the inherent durability of stainless steel, making it ideal for brand spaces that value character and texture.

CHYIHAUR's strategy in the Joman Studio case was 'contrast rather than competition': with gleaming medals already in the space, the sign took the opposite path with a deep, raw rust patina. The contrast of one bright material against one subdued lets the two set each other off—the sign stays understated yet prominent, and all the more memorable for it.

In the Joman Studio case, CHYIHAUR worked alongside the designers at bofa_design from the visual tone-setting stage, ensuring the sign's material, placement, and overall style aligned with the space. After fabrication in the workshop, the sign was installed in coordination with the interior fit-out, so the finished surfaces met with precision.
