Project Planning & Execution

CHYIHAUR Team

The brand impression of Iceday should feel like ice itself: clean, translucent, crisp. CHYIHAUR designed a storefront of flat painted stainless-steel floating-stud letters, lifting the characters off the wall to cast a soft shadow, then adding outdoor lighting tubes for front illumination. The result carries a metallic quality by day and stays clearly legible after dark, achieving the sharpest identity with the simplest elements.

01

Project Background & Challenges

Iceday needed a storefront sign that captured the brand's tone: distinctive enough to stand out on the street, yet never bulky or busy in a way that would undermine the brand's clean, refreshing image. Set outdoors, the sign had to be weather-resistant and durable, while the lighting method needed to balance nighttime legibility with overall visual simplicity — the key trade-offs to reconcile in planning this project.

Grey handwritten 3D lettering stands off a white brick-patterned wall, casting a soft shadow below; above it a glass window carries orange outline script, with a light tube glowing along its inner top edge.

The Trade-off Against a Light Box

A clean brand image and street-level legibility are usually reconciled with illuminated box letters — at the cost of a thick box on the wall. Here the flat-cut letters are held clear of the wall on standoffs, so their own drop shadow gives them depth by day; the lighting is an outdoor tube throwing light onto the face. Nothing is packed inside the letters, so they stay a thin sheet of painted stainless steel.

Design Goals & Strategy

We chose "do the simple elements exactly right" as our strategy: the letters were formed from flat painted stainless steel and mounted with floating studs to lift each character off the wall, using natural light and shadow to add dimension. Rather than an illuminated letter box, we used outdoor lighting tubes to wash the front face evenly, so the painted surface reads by material during the day and by light at night — both states keeping the brand's crisp impression intact.

A long glass window with orange outline script runs across a white brick facade; grey handwritten 3D lettering stands off the wall below it, above a dim passage where scooters are parked and lit poster boxes glow on the wall.

It Needn't Be the Brightest

From across the driveway the wall is saying three things at once: the orange line lettering on the window, the grey dimensional letters on the white wall, and the two lit ice-dessert posters to the right. The grey letters barely contrast with the white brick; what carries them is the amount of empty wall around them, so they read without being the brightest thing there.

FAQ

This is a storefront signage case executed by CHYIHAUR for Iceday, using flat painted stainless-steel floating-stud letters paired with outdoor tube front-lighting. The letters are lifted off the wall for dimensional light and shadow, completed in 7 days with 100% design fidelity.

The sign's letters are made from flat stainless steel with a painted surface finish and mounted off the wall with floating studs, so the faces stand proud and cast a natural shadow — light on the eye yet full of dimension.

Floating-stud letters are a method that lifts the characters off the wall on rear studs; the gap between face and wall creates layers of light and shadow, giving more dimension and a finer quality than flush-mounted letters. Paired with outdoor tube front-lighting, they keep clear brand legibility day and night.

Using outdoor lighting tubes for front illumination preserves the true material of the painted stainless-steel letters — a metallic quality by day and an even wash by night. The overall look is cleaner than a light box, in keeping with the brand's clean, crisp tone.

The Iceday storefront sign had a 7-day construction cycle and 100% design fidelity; a one-year warranty on the fabricated work is provided upon completion.
