A Sign That Grows With Time and Steel

CHYIHAUR crafted outdoor signage for Ark Greenhouses using 3.2mm weathering steel formed into laser-cut panels. A non-illuminated design lets the material's own rusted patina speak, blending naturally with the greenhouse setting. Completed in 12 days with a one-year workmanship warranty.

Project Planning & Execution

CHYIHAUR Team

A greenhouse is a vessel for plants and time, and its signage should be too. For Ark Greenhouses' outdoor sign, CHYIHAUR deliberately avoided an illuminated light box, choosing instead weathering steel that transforms with the years—the rust layer on its surface is its natural coat, gaining character with age, perfectly echoing a setting that lives in harmony with nature.

01

Project Background & Challenge

Ark Greenhouses' outdoor sign sits in a setting where nature takes the lead, and an overly polished or high-brightness illuminated sign would feel out of place. The brand needed an identity that could withstand the elements while blending into the planted landscape—and it had to be fabricated and installed within a tight schedule so the venue could open on time.

The Case for No Lighting

The site is led by planting and glass houses, where a brightly lit sign would have sat awkwardly against its surroundings, so the lighting was set to none from the very start. A 3.2mm weathering steel plate was used instead and left to speak for itself: by day, recognition is carried by the rust texture and the cut outlines, while the material itself has to stand up to outdoor wind and rain to sit alongside the planting for the long run.

Design Goals & Strategy

We set the direction as "let the material speak": 3.2mm weathering steel as the primary material, with the brand lettering rendered through laser-cut panels and a non-illuminated lighting scheme, so daytime recognition rests on the steel's rusted texture and crisp cut outlines. Weathering steel forms a stable protective patina on its own, requiring no additional coating or maintenance and deepening in character over time—perfectly matched to the natural tone of the greenhouse setting.

Cut Precision and the Rust Layer

The uneven rust across the face is not decay but the stable protective layer weathering steel forms on its own, so no repainting or coating maintenance is needed. The lettering was laser-cut on a single 3.2mm plate, which is why the outlines come out this clean.

What the Cutouts Also Do

The panel is mounted across a black mesh fence, and the letters are cut clean through, so the planting behind shows straight through the openings and becomes the sign's own backdrop.

Project Outcome

The finished Ark Greenhouses outdoor sign blends naturally into its setting through the rusted texture of weathering steel, with the laser-cut lettering outlines reading clearly in daylight and 100% design fidelity. The entire project was fabricated and installed within 12 days, and the non-illuminated design means virtually no ongoing lighting maintenance cost—a sign that only grows richer with time.

FAQ

This is an outdoor signage project CHYIHAUR delivered for Ark Greenhouses in 2023. The sign is made from 3.2mm laser-cut weathering steel panels with a non-illuminated design, letting the material's own rusted texture blend with the greenhouse's natural atmosphere, completed in 12 days.

Weathering steel is a steel that naturally develops a stable, protective rust layer on its surface, and CHYIHAUR often uses it for outdoor signage aiming for a natural texture. It withstands the outdoor environment without extra coating, and its rusted texture matures over time, giving the sign more character with age while lowering maintenance costs.

The primary material of the Ark Greenhouses sign is 3.2mm weathering steel, with the brand lettering and panels formed by laser cutting and a non-illuminated lighting scheme—recognition rests entirely on the material texture and cut outlines.

Non-illuminated signage suits settings built around a daytime image and environmental harmony, and Ark Greenhouses is exactly this kind of case. CHYIHAUR builds recognition through the crisp laser-cut lettering outlines and the distinctive color of weathering steel, giving the sign ample presence in natural light.

The construction period was 12 days with 100% design fidelity; a one-year workmanship warranty is provided upon completion.
